Which Phone & ISP ???

Its been a miffed sort of day today.....

Turns out NTL having still been charging me for the TV I had removed ages ago so I think its time to change provider

I have been quite please with NTL's broadband but the telephone charges are taking the mick and the standing charge is a bit much - my average bill is around £70 per month and its only for two adults and an ankle biter !!!

Still....is it a good idea to have BOTH services provided by the same supplier - (well that was the idea with NTL !!!!!), just had a look on...

http://www.uswitch.com/index.asp

and BT Broadband is NOT available in my area, which last year was one of the biggest Broadband uptake areas in the UK.

The best I've seen so far is BT for the Phone and Tiscali for Broadband.......

Comments please.

Ours is only about £35 for phone AND broadband...and that's NTL.

We also only pay £16 for the basic family television package...

How did they manage to charge you that much?

Telewest for the TV £13 pm for family pack
BT broadband £25 pm @ 512kbps

£38 all in but thats not including the phone which with rental and calls is around £40 per quarter.
So around £50 a month for two adults (is this good?)

Recently changed from BT to GLOW TELECOM for £10.00 per month providing me with unlimited local and national calls.
Other numbers i.e. 0845 and 0870 etc charged accordingly.

My broadband provider is e7even.com who provide me with 512kbps at equivalent of £16.66 per month. (That's because you pay for a years contract in advance).
Service is up there with the best. Download connection runs at 450+kbps. Not had one drop-out. Got on the case very quickly when I reported a significant speed deterioration.
All in all very happy with the service and customer support from these people.

Don't get ripped off by the likes of Tiscali et al, £15.99 for 150kbps is daylight robbery......

Frank,

If BT Broadband isn't available in your area then the chances are that you won't get it through anyone else either.

BT still own most of the exchanges where the ADSL (broadband) equipment is housed, and it's these that get upgraded. Tiscali will supply you with broadband, but on condition that you have a BT phoneline which can be upgraded to ADSL. All they're doing is repackaging the BT Wholesale service with their own brandname, and a few quid on top...

Have a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ for info about broadband. This has some helpful links and FAQs so you should be able to find out what's available and compare prices.

Think yourself lucky you can even think about broadband! BT cannot supply broadband to our village becasue its too far from the exchange, there is no cable in the village cos its not worth their bother for a couple of hundred homes, we cant have a dish up cos its a listed building....

The best speed i can manage on dial up is 38Kbs!!!

We do have electricy though (unless there is a light shower within 5 miles).

Sorry Paul,

I have a friend only 10 miles away in exactly the same boat...and he is on BT dial-up as well.

Time to use some smart software to speed up your connection or look ahead to what next page you might go to - cant remember what it called now....

I do remember a romote island village in Scotland setting up there own microwave system I think... failing that .... time to you and your neighbours to bombard BT with requests to upgrade the exchange !!!

Good luck
