Some years ago I had a similar problem and got over it by re-stamping the no's. Not too much hassle if you can find some of the same size font. You could use a hand held engraver and go over the no's that way. If the frame was ever checked the Police have the kit to see if someone has attempted to change the no. not re-instate it, so it shouldn't be a problem.
