The thicker oil and shim trick is similar to the one played on LC's all those years ago. Only we used 10p pieces on top of the springs as they were a perfect fit......................

Crude as it sounds, it could work quite well with a bit of experimenting. Have they been serviced recently? oil change? That'd be a good start so at least you know if the standard setup is somewhere close.
That'd be the cheapest option.
After that, i'd suggest going to one of the specialists already mentioned. K-Tech are very good as are Kais in Atherton.
