The reason the 749s and 749r 2004 are so high is because if closing shims need to be changed then the cylinder heads have to be removed as they use race type taper collets on these two models only.
The good news is that Ducati are expecting nearly double the mileage before any of the closing shims require changing so its highly unlikely that anyone should end up with a bill anywhere near the maximum cost shown,problem is dealers quote the figures from the book without explaining things
