Is it necessary to tap the hole, or would a self-taping screw cut its own thread?

(Just a thought as I've a flappy hugger and no tap...)

I’d definitely tap it. You could give the Velcro method a try, use the stuff that they fix the headlight protectors with, but I think you are asking for trouble with a self tapper.
