I had my Speedo cable replaced under warranty on my 2002 748R at Ducati Leeds, due to poor fitting by Ducati factory. It got dragged into the gap between the calliper and the disc, wore through the cable outer and rubbed a nice white stripe onto the mudguard.
Once replaced it went between the two calliper bolts as on the 998FE I was told.
Silver lining is getting a cheap replacement mudguard in carbon.
