Nat | I use mine in the gym daily without problem, but I'm sure it depends where you wear it. 'Tis true that they're just a hard disk, but they have loads of buffering built in so the shocks need to be fairly frequent and severe to cause trouble.
If she's using a treadmill then get her to rest the ipod on the handrail. If she's out jogging a decent arm-band case might work. Otherwise you'll be mostly getting her a new ipod shuffle...
