Maybe the original frame had something not quite right with it and may have been replaced under warranty, Ducati Coventry should know the reason for the frame replacement. New Frames come without a number and the existing number should be transfered to the new frame then the old frame should have its number removed or the fram destroyed by cutting off the headstock.

So Yes they should be able to stamp the numbers, the question that needs asking is why was the frame replaced. Sometimes it can just be down to the paint job as a warranty component it should be treated no different than say a fuel tank or a wheel, if your brand new bike came with a dirty great big scratch in it somewhere you would want that part replaced under warranty, so why not the frame.
