The hugger to use is dicteted by the type of swinging arm.
Pre 05 - the 999r and thne 749r had unique huggers as they were the only ones with the fabricated swinging arms.
The 05 bikes now have similar arm.

In answer to your question - you cannot use a pre-05 hugger on a 749R UNLESS it was designed for the 749R/999R.
