er, a screwdriver type allen key(the interchangeable bit kind) makes it a lot easier as you can put a little bit of pressure on to get them to engage. or a small socket style allen key on a 10 - 15 cm extension.

Best bit of kit I ever bought was one of the dinky Halfords Professional 1/4" drive ratchets, with a couple of extension bars. Don't get an enormous range of sockets in 1/4", but I got 7-14 inclusive, which covers most things, plus 5,6,8,10,14 allen sockets (although the allen sockets are actually 3/8" drive).
I didn't bother buying a 3/8" ratchet, as I had the 1/4" one (and a 1/2" one, of course), so I got a 3/8" wobble bar, or whatever you call them. The plain bar with a hinge at the end. Between them they do 90% of the jobs on my bike. The 1/2" stuff just gathers dust most of the time.
