900ss cracked frame

I have a '98 900ss, never been dropped, FSH, only 10,800 miles on the clock. It has the (common) cracking around the headstock on the two top tubes. I've been advised that a new frame is the preferred option but this is also the most expensive option.
I'd appreciate advice on which way to go.
Is there any likelihood of a goodwill replacement? I've noticed that in the States, they seem to get free replacements for 13 year old bikes, how about here?
Has anyone had a PERMANENT repair with welding? Also suggested was a secondhand 600 frame as these are different and less prone to cracking.
All advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated apart from "sell it and get a Mille" , as some wag suggested to me a while ago (referring to Honda SP1).

It's also quite likely here. Go to your local Ducati main dealer and have a word. Generally the frame is covered but not labour (Or you can swap it out yourself).

I have just had my frame back from JHP Coventry after having the number stamped on it.
The frame was replaced by Ducati UK as a good will gesture. Check out the frames stress crack string in the ss section.
The first thing to do is conact Ducati UK Customer services and explain the situation to them and see how you get on from there. I can only say how impressed I was with Ducati UK and JHP Covenrty for the attention I have been given.
Good luck.
Cheers
