OK - you can't target fat loss with exercise. If you want to see your abs you have to reduce the layer of fat covering the muscle. Hence the GI diet. GI is the glaucomic index, roughly speaking it will take the starch out of your diet - white potatoes, white rice, white bread, white pasta - basically go for whole meal. Eat fruit. chicken and fish are good sources of protein. Wholemeal pitta filled with turkey slices, lettuce, balsamic vineger and so on for the inbetween meals. that sort of thing. Most things sold in tesco have a GI on the label - obviously go for a low number!! Loads of book with GI recipes on amazon.
Exercise, will build the muscle but be careful - muscle is heavier than fat. So either judge your shape in the mirror or get the scales that show your % of body fat. It will have a guide in it that tells you a range depending on your height and weight and age.
Again, the hardest bit is the shock of starting. The complete change of diet. Stick with it for a month religiously, then gradualy have 1 or 2 cheat days a week. Your better half will think you are a god for anting to do it - unless she thinks you are saying she is overweight! and then both of you eat what you like at the wekend. The results in a month will inspire you to stick with it but you have to want to do it.

Mogwai...I'd say an half an hour workout with your avatar should help shed a few pounds...
