Wow, you're the first person I've discussed PF with who has felt that way. I think they did their best stuff post Syd.
It's such a shame that Dave and Roger didn't get on in the end. I would pay LARGE sums of cash to see them live back together. I think Dave Gilmour is a legend.

Edit - I did like Relics ... so it's not as if I didn't like PF with Syd ... have you read any stuff on the way the other band members felt while he was with them? Makes interesting reading, I don't think they would have been half the band they were/are if he had of stayed with them. I think he would have destroyed them. As is often the case with genuis, it's on the edge. Just take a look at the Chillli Peppers guitarist (forget his name) that died of a heroin overdose. He was a genious and inspired the band to Blood Sugar Sex Magic - they wouldn't have produced that without him, or the fact that Anthony Kiedis (sp) was a recovering heroin addict ...
