which was what made them interesting , without him it was bland, same formula, same sound hardly pushing the envelope but commercially succesful, made them loads of cash though and got them lots of fans

er, no not really a fan at all it all sounded the same not like the Syd years, by that time I was listening to Velvets, NY Dolls then into The Clash as i preferred the garage punk sound , or a bit of Neu or La Dusseldorf thrown in if i wanted guitar/electronica I blame John Peel for my musical tastes, he's got a lot to answer for

Wow, you're the first person I've discussed PF with who has felt that way. I think they did their best stuff post Syd.

It's such a shame that Dave and Roger didn't get on in the end. I would pay LARGE sums of cash to see them live back together. I think Dave Gilmour is a legend.

Edit - I did like Relics ... so it's not as if I didn't like PF with Syd ... have you read any stuff on the way the other band members felt while he was with them? Makes interesting reading, I don't think they would have been half the band they were/are if he had of stayed with them. I think he would have destroyed them. As is often the case with genuis, it's on the edge. Just take a look at the Chillli Peppers guitarist (forget his name) that died of a heroin overdose. He was a genious and inspired the band to Blood Sugar Sex Magic - they wouldn't have produced that without him, or the fact that Anthony Kiedis (sp) was a recovering heroin addict ...

Sorry but i just couldnt get into it, ummagumma was ok as it was more experimental but once they got to Dark Side i was listening to John Peel every night and knew there was other stuff i'd rather listen to. it was interesting to watch them reformed at live 8 but not really something i'd usually bother listening to.

Or Ian Curtis with Joy Division, he was responsible for their best work yet after him they moved on into areas they'ed probably never have gotten into. Few bands are brave enough to try different things and it can take one member leaving for them to do so.
