Andy, I bet sometimes you must wish you had told everyone on here that you were a librarian instead of a copper!
I don't know what staffing levels are like where you are, but here on Merseyside I have called for the Police on many occassions over recent years and the response has generally been excellent ..... 3 patrol cars within minutes for a gang of lads smashing up materials at road works, similar response after detaining a would be burglar, similar response to three men trying to smash their way through a shop window to get to power tools....but also over 20 minutes after dialling 999 after detaining a drunk driver.....( '' I'm sorry there is no - one available'' ) and over 3/4 of an hour after being in a scout hut with very young kids and being intimidated by a large group of teenagers, down to my 83 year old mum having her purse stolen in a local supermarket and no one able to attend at all.
Whenever I've had a poor response time the attending officer(s ) have been very apologetic and the reason given on each occassion has been similar to '' I' m very sorry but there are only two of us on tonight to cover this area and my colleague has locked up so now there's only me available''
Some of my friends are police officers and they have told me that sometimes at night there are only a handfull of them to patrol the whole penninsula including the towns and the countryside.
I assume that most crimes are committed during daylight hours and that is therefore when most officers are deployed for duty, but surely if officer numbers were increased dramatically then we could be far more pro - active in making life far more unpleasant for low lifes generally. I for one would gladly pay more in taxes / rates to know that my kids could leave their bikes on the drive instead of having to constantly put them away.
You guys on the front line do a great job under very difficult circimstances and like most front line staff get all the aggro which should really be directed at 'The higher up bosses'. As my wife says when she gets aggro...'' Don't shout at me, I'm here trying to help you!''
All the best for 2006
Phil
