Electrics gone kapput

Went to go for a short xmas eve ride but when I flicked the indicator and all the electrics blew on my 996. Luckily was outside the house, so not stranded, but bloody annoying

I'm sure this is 'must know' stuff, but whats the most likely causes of this??? The 3.5amp fuse for the indicators has blown, but even replacing this theres still nothing happening elsewhere - no dash, fuel pump, starter, etc.

Rather hoping this is something i can sort myself with a few choice hints from someone who knows more than i do!

Hello Jason,

It could well be damp getting in where its not supposed too. Causing the short. I would check the big 30A charging fuse just in front of the battery, then the fuse up by the ECU I think its a 10A maybe different size on your bike. Check the battery with a multimeter, and there is no furring on any connectors then all fuses in the fuse box.

I am sure somebody will be alone with more knowlege with electrics, But thats where I would start.

Good luck hope you get it sorted.

regards

i'm with Topi.... that sounds like a good place to start...

once you've confirmed all that check the connectors for headlight/indicators/clocks etc etc.

The indicator bullet connections that meet up with the main lume , tucked under the headlight unit can put too much "strain" on the current if the connections are dirty and may short across blowing the fuze ? 4D

checked all known fuses when it happended - except for one up by ECU (too late at night to do that now - where is it though so i can check in morning??)

Even if the bullet connections blow the fuse, i dont get why all the electrics have gone - unless just co-incidence with something more serious???

Hello Jason,

the fuse by the ECU in within a black casing, Lift the seat you should see it on the RHS. possibly a power surge, as the wiring on the orignal lumb is not that great, look for any signs of burnout wires working from the battery outwards.
