I think you'll find that the 998R has the same engine as the early 999R. An extra 1cc but a shorter stroke and an extra 3 bhp over the 998S. Although the 998S is supposed to be the same as the 996R if you're a saddo anorak (like me) you'll find the in the original Ducati bumf the 996R claimed 135 bhp and the less exotic 998S claimed a whole extra horse at 136 bhp.

Must get back to reading my telephone directories.
