The engine is the same as the 600 Monster and is fairly reliable. The SS is more likely to have been thrashed tho,so listen out for the usual knocks and rattles.I think it is a wet clutch on those models so it should be pretty quiet, again listen for any nasty noises and graunchy action. The chassis is same throughout the SS range and very understressed by the 600's power.Get the back wheel in the air and check for movement in the rear shock bushes, they are pretty weak and have no grease points.
If you get a test ride,do a couple of emergency stops and check the fork seals are not leaking. The early models had a few problems with leaky seals, the later seals are a retro fit and are much better.
The electrics are much the same throughout the SS range, and again fairly reliable, just check everything works, lights, indics, horn etc.Its not unusual for the regulator to fail, but as long as the charging light goes out, then it should be ok.
Good luck!
