Weeksey,we were in the same group at Brands Hatch in April,Inters.Would you say we were in the right group on that day and did you see any inconsiderate riding from me.Genuinely intrested in your reply.

As for experience that was my 6th trackday in 3 years [plus the 2 races this season].I would not call myself a racer personally but i do have a idea of what constitutes going fast.

The biggest problem was the level of ability in the group.On the whole in hindsight i would say it was poor.To many had decided they would not be seen dead in novices as they were all mates.The cue to get there "knees down" at Sear was comical, until one fell off and got ran over by someone else right in front of me.By 11 oclock 25% of the fast group had fell off and they announced could everyone calm down as they had more incidents to this point than at the last 8 trackdays.

The nature of the track also exagerated the speed differences.The first corner and round the back through the bombhole and especially Coram are very fast indeed.$th and 5th gear flat out stuff.If you ride well through these areas you arrive in the braking zone carrying considerably more speed and appear next to someone quickly.
On the long straights i moved as far to the left as soon as possible to keep out of the way.I thought it only polite.The speed difference in my group was not as huge as i expected but then very few carried any corner speed onto the straights.How different that would be in fast group with the likes of Couchcommando on is 150 bhp missile, slicks and corner speed.H,mm

As for valued roadbikes.I think my little bike is worth more to me than any of those Green things

I think the final comment on the day must be that despite it being a No Limits Trackday several complaints were made about the instructors passing to close to certain people..I think that says alot about the type of day it became

Nope, certainly didn't fella. You rode very well that day...


there's always a but you were only close to me 3 times and i honestly don't recall any of your overtakes, so i'm assuming they didn't scare me

I still feel people who are actively racing should be in fast group really. BUt again, that's a toughie as people need to learn new tracks or run in new bikes... etc etc.

As usual i'm playing devils advocate to an extent as i wasn't there and have seen you ride quickly and safely.....

I come in peace from the MCNNovices site before you all spill your Chianti.

Just thought I'd point out that the day at Snetterton was arranged by two members and No-Limits as a day especially for Novices and the normal trackday groups didn't apply, which is why I think we had the situation that we had. The Novice goup was for people that really were first-timers, the 2nd group was billed as 'not quite novices' rather than full Inters and the 3rd group was a mix of Regular Inters/Fast so there was a mixed bag of riders across the board.

The general feeling was that anyone that is competing in a race series really should have been in the Fast Group, but I guess Griff wasn't to know that.

Nice bike by the way. I was next to you in the pit garage on the ZRX1100.

Cant help giving my penneth worth here. I was at Brands track day and Griff passed me on a number of occasions over the day and I was never spooked. He always looked like he was in complete control of the bike - which in fact helped me to go faster seeing what he was doing. I'm new to this race malarkey so I am not used to close manouvers either.


Anyway I have to admit that I have been struggling a bit with my riding(although enjoying it immensely) and I have been running at the back of the pack in the 583 races. So my question is what group do I go in? I would want to go in the inters where I might be able to follow a few faster DD riders to help me out bit - if you don't mind of course.

What do you class a novice? and when are you too fast?

Griff has done 6 trackdays and 2 race meetings - I'd say that he's a novice.

Is it his fault that he's a good rider?

If a bloke on a 50bhp bike that's probably going around Snett in high 1m 20s (i.e. nearer to 1m 30) is seen to be too fast or too dangerous - then you're all very very sad people.

From my experience, the fast group is full of 1000cc bikes with guys who are blindingly fast in a straight line and then park up mid corner - that to me is more dangerous than someone like Griff or any DD rider for that matter.

What was dodgy last year, was when Mr Devils Advocate brought his GSXR750 to Snett, and blatted down the straights very impressively, and then 5-point turned it through the corners.

It annoys me that just because someone has done 2 race meetings that they are now a 'racer' and should be in the fast group - what a load of crap. Best thing to do is learn to ride in the slow group before adventuring out in to inters with the super fast 100mph top speed 583's - they're wild!!!!

Yeh, you're probably right. These slow cornering, 1000cc things were getting right in my way in the Fast group at Donington last year......
