The old head versus heart argument is starting to rear up as I am considering the next bike after reaquainting myself with bikes with the Fazer....

I have loved the Ducatis since seeing the 888 many years ago and I fancy a 748. I can pick up a 2000 ish model for say £3750, so far so good but then the head takes over.....

6000 mile service around £500, 12000 around £600.... Woah there so a minimum of £500 a year and I probably won't do more than a couple of thousand miles!

So should I do it anyway or go for a different twin, say an Aprilia Mille, Suzuki SV1000s or something? Not sure of the Mille servicing costs but the SV I am told is £200 odd a year. Sure won't set the world alight but I have only done 650 miles since a 12 year lay off....

But the looks, the sound and I hope the handling of a 748 would make up for the servicing wouldn't they??

yes as long as you budget for the servicing costs I did when i bought mine in 2002 but then threw it down the road a couple of weeks after buying it :-| £1500 to fix !!! .

Still kept it for 3 years though !!

YES and YES again, I have had a 748 and a 748R both great bikes, the servicing wont be that much. They have the X - Factor it`s hard to explain, I rode the Triumph 675 last week, great bike, but just missing somthing.

But do you guys follow the strict every 12 months servicing? Those prices are my fairly local dealer as per their website. Actually prices are: 6k £353.65 plus vat, 12k £514.22 plus vat.

I've got an SV650 for you to try if you make it up London way - you'll have to imagine the extra 40hp for the thousand though.
I've not had it long but early impressions are that it's very forgiving on the road but suspension reaches its limit quite early on (there's lots of mods available for that though).

Let's face it though - you WILL end up getting a 748 though because that's where your heart is

Yes service every year, belts have to be changed on the R`s every year.
My dealer ( Snells ) takes mileage in to acount, they are expensive to service but ( in my opinion worth it ) they just look so good.

of course we all think you should buy an SV1000 ......
