I had the same embarassment on way back to work from lunch once.
Ended up being the sender unit in the tank .
The worst thing about that is that im a mechanic and I had to call for road sevice to get some fuel .

When you fill up with petrol, reset your trip to 0000. When it gets to around 100, look for a station. Never need to rely on the fuel warning "test" light bulb!!
I'm sure you all do this already though.

In the good old days there was always the reserve tap................
If anyone finds the post with the answer to how long you can go once the light comes on can they post the answer.
