Pretty much as the title says....

My brother found a reasonably new outboard motor in the shore-break and is looking to get it going. It's doubtful whether it's been turned over since it fell off whatever boat if fell off, but I'd still assume that it's full of water.

As somebody will probably reclaim it he doesn't want to spend any money getting it going, so what's the best bet for getting it up and running without trashing the engine?

Place mouth over exhaust and blow five times looking for either a swelling fuel tank or salty fluid emitting from differant orofices. Failing that remove sparking plug and shake to living daylights out of the thing, put it back on another boat then ring the AA. Hope this helps (I'm sure it wont) 4D

Place the engine over a heater, turn it over very slowly (don't try running it) to drive the moisture from it. Keep turming over at intervals. As already suggested, spark plug out and then WD40 down the barrel.
Don't use your mouth, especially if you do get it running. Cheers.

Thanks Loz, finally a solution that doesn't require me giving 'oral pleasure' to the bloody thing!

What make of engine is it, have you thought of looking at the manufactures web site or users forums for this type of information?

I was under the impression that anything abandoned or lost at sea becomes salvage and therefore free to anyone who salvages it.Of course i may be mistaken.

It's not so much the water as the salt you need to get rid of quick take plug out strip carb turn engine over afew times then tip some wd or parafin diesel down inlet port & turn the engine over afew more times the tip some clean petrol in & repeat, rebuild & start with x fingers.

Strip it !,its the only way,& re-new all gaskets,it cost you nothing after all !
