Check in Classic American magazine, as they have a directory which might have contact details for a club - On sale in WH Smiths, its a club called the Pre 49's you need to look for. The club link isnt working at the moment
They have a massive library of old books and a wealth of info with many old cars over here.
I used to deal with them about 7+ years ago but dont have contacts any longer.

Go to this show at Knebworth on Sat/Sun this weekend, info as 'Rally of the Giants on this link.:

Sorry cant help more but I worked with the yank models from 60's, but know these guys could help.

Can you use on of those CDI systems that used to clip onto the coil? Can't think who used to make them but they didn't use the coil, you take the points out and put an optical chopper in instead.

Yep Alan, they are the ones! Must be a few years since they were sold though what with most cars these days having electronic ignition as standard.
Didn't know they wouldn't work on 6v though.

thanks for the info ,I know what you mean, but I don't think they will work on 6v systems, but I'll look into it.
I've not seen them around for some time know, but I did see reports that they worked well.

cheers

My first car was a 1959 sit-up-and-beg Ford Popular with a 3 speed crash gearbox, cable operated drum brakes and yes, 6 volt positive earth electrics.

I would have thought that you could source a coil from something like this - cos I think your best bet is a temporary fix involving taking the original coil out of circuit and using another one in it's place. Should be easy enough to modify the primary connections shouldn't it?
