PC Help - Hard Drive not recognised.

Hi Folks

Not sure if anyone can help me.

I have 3 hard drive attached to my XP SP2 system. One is a Maxtor 300GB hard drive that I use to dump all my BSB images onto.

I have C:, D: and the Maxtor 300GB drive as E:

This drive was getting full so I have purchased a new Maxtor drive. I unhitchedt he original 300GB drive wehn the PC was switched off and hooked up the new drive. I went through "Computer Management" and 'initialised' the new drive and set up the partition.

The new drive was listed as E: in Windows Explorer ready for me to write data to.

Since that time I cannot get Explorer to display my original drive when I hook that back up to the PC. I've gone back in to "Computer Management" to see if it's there.

The drive is NOT listed in the Disk Management section but is listed in the Hard Drives section of Device Manger along with my other two drives. Why is this???.

I've removed the driver for the disk and restarted my PC. Upon restart, XP finds the 'new' hardware and states it's a Hard Disk yet I still have no drive listed in Windows Explorer or any other instance when I am met with "save to drive" type windows.

I've not yet hooked up the newer Maxtor drive to see if it still recognises that.

Can anyone shed any light for me on what has happened and how I can get my drive listed again.

The below attachment shows what I see in Windows Explorer, and "Computer Management"

I need to get access to my pics and other files on the disk.

Many thanks for any help offered.

Regards, Guy

Hmmm...I've suffered something similar in the past and had to reconfigure the jumpers on the drives (physically - on the pins) so that only one was 'master' and the other were all slaves.

There are some useful format / diag utils on the Maxtor website if I remember right.

Good luck - Frank

Thanks for your response Khush,

But as per my above detail, the drive is not listed in Computer Management but does appear in Device Manager. That means I can't initialize or partition it although this has alreay been done anyway when I first installed that drive. Wouldn't want to do it again if I could for fear of wiping all my data.

Thanks, Guy
