Had an Evo6 when they first came out. Ran it for about 3 years until it met a sorry end. Nothing ever went wrong with it except for Clutches and brake pads etc which were pretty expensive. Service intervals were every 4500 miles though which was not cheap either. There is a forum somewhere lancerregistry or something similar which will be full of info.

Owned a Evo V11 for a couple of years now. The IX is a better car, the engine has a variable cam timing system over the 7, better suspension and so on, lots of detail changes. Parallels with the 916/996/998 development!!

They are amazingly practical with as much interior space as a a Vectra and a big boot, but with serious performance. The downside is serious running costs. A full set of Brake pads all round with OEM bits are nearly £1000, but there are specialists who can reduce the bills significantly. Fuel consumption of Super unleaded in the 20's taking it steady, in the teens driving enthusiastically, and in single figures on track!! Check out an insurance quote as well.

They are a fast but heavy car, the brakes can be a weak point, A set of slicks can be gone in one track day, with a set of standard discs every 3rd or fourth track day. A few full power starts can see the standard clutch off as well.

Depreciation is pretty bad as well with new models out every 12 to 24 Months.

Having said all that for the performance they are hard to beat at the price they are, point to point very, very quick and as yet I have never fallen off!

Also easy to get drawn into mild tuning to give 400 BHP, about £1500 worth. The mechanical bits other than the weaknesses mentioned are pretty good.

Some say spend the money on a Porsche but you would be looking at double the cost for a 4x4 version, maybe a Subaru?? A lot depends on what you want use it for, road or track or a combination. They are not foolproof despite the AYC etc, if you do get into trouble you will be going very fast.

I'm glad you mentioned the price of the pads Ray! I was having a conversation about Evos a while ago with someone and mentioned that I remember being quoted £600 + for a set of pads for the front. The bloke I was talking to just would not believe me, got to the point where I thought I must have dreamt it. I agree re clutches, only a couple of full bore starts will have them slipping.

Must also agree they are not foolproof as I managed to write mine off.

I currently own an IX GT , jap import with Ti turbo, Its fairly fast to put it mildly and handles canny too. Running costs sofar arent too bad but it does have 4.5K service intervals so if ur cranking the miles it might start to burn the readies , sofar my only service bill 1st 4.5k service was £145.oo.
Havent got any complaints, I'd say its best car I've owned for perfromance and usability. PS its got enough grunt on boost to steer from the rear so its not a tyre shredding understeering barge that my previous impreza was (slight exageration to emphasis a point).
Also the GT only has an active centre diff with plated LSDs in the front and rear axles, the uk IX320 has an active rear diff. some prefer active some dont, there are stories of people over cooking active diff cars into a bend and backing off resulting in large snap oversteer in to the scenery backwards, cant say what happens on a plate diff as i like to keep it shiney side up, but its been very predictable so far.

for tuning take it to Mark Harrison at Owen developments near Kingston Bagpuize, Oxfordshire. he was doing the FQ series for Mitsubishi and also prepped maps for their 4x4 king cab type jobs when they were losing sales to Nissan.

top bloke, knows his stuff. Dont know if they still do it but they used to build turbos for the toyota WRC team.

DD,

There's an Evo 9.5 Allegedly coming very soon then the Evo 10 late on next year, for deffo. I kid you not.

Mitsubishi and Subaru use these cars to fight it out in the Production cup in rallying so upgrades are a yearly occurrance that can have a bit of an impact on second hand prices.

Don't wanna put you off as they are great cars IMHO.

The 911 goes 12k b4 a service. And, unless you have a mishap, they go on for ever and ever (hope I haven't just shot myself in the foot ...)
Depreciation hits hard in the first couple of years. But for anything decent, that's always going to be the case.
Why buy a Porsche when you can borrow one?
I'd go for the Evo. It's what you want. High performance cars and bikes are expensive toys. We all know that.
Buy a second hand one. See how you get on. If it's the bees knees, part ex for a new one. Now that sounds like a plan!
