This is the Damon Hill who twice drove straight into the back of Michael when trying to pass him in 1995?

This is the Damon Hill who was only even remotely in the 1994 championship race because the FIA manipulated the championship - how many races were Schumacher/Benetton excluded from for one reason or another?

This is the Damon Hill who's first race win in that controversial 1994 year came at Barcelona when Schumacher drove 2/3 race distance with his Benetton stuck in 5th gear - and still finished second?

This is the Damon Hill, who in an identical car in 1994, struggled to get anywhere near the late, great Ayrton Senna, and yet somehow claimed to be a genuine title contender?

Every so often there are truly greats in any form of sport - Senna was one, and Schumacher was another.

As a bloke - yes. As a driver, I agree with the original post, he's a far better driver than I will ever be - anyone at that level is, and Hill was undoubtedly very quick over a single qualifying lap, but he's just not up there with the top drivers - every so often someone comes along who is in a different league to everybody else - Senna, Schumacher... Rossi...

Nobody mentions Kenny Roberts Jr as in the same league as Rossi - but he won a world title, but we're all agreed that Rossi is a genius, and Roberts Jr isn't. Same with Schumacher and Hill IMHO

[quote=philthy]
Damon said he was a brilliant driver but that his winning all the time was bad for the sport. Too right it was. It's become a boring procession which I, my family and many of my friends have stopped watching.

I think there are two sets of comments by Hill on the BBC website now - no-one can disagree with his statement above, but it's hardly Schumacher or Ferrari's fault for doing a better job than the others - same as it's not Rossi/Yamaha's fault for doing a better job than the others in GP

As for the comments that Schumcher changed what was acceptible in F1 - that's nonsense - Prost and Senna started that in the late 80s when they decided it was ok to take each other out (even as teammates) in order to stop the other one winning...
