If you can disconnect the battery without the alarm going off when not in service mode, then the internal battery is dead ............ at least. It sounds like the relay that cuts the starter circuit has gone to??
Glyn's idea is very valid as this would prevent the internal battery from charging and the alarm from sensing voltage drop. Having no power would render it null and void and may have failed safe on the starter circuit.
Check the wire and also the fuse first.
