Just for those who were left puzzled by the same question that I asked, I have had confirmation from a race-tuner specialist that the pipes of a 748R will indeed fit and that a full 50mm is the sweetest thing on a 916. Just needs the right chip and the right fuelling. He also confirmed that a full 54mm would give more top end but would be detrimental to the rideability at lower revs.
