This symptom is exactly what I have on my 916, spoke to Tim (Motodesigns) he had no idea what it was from my description but he's having a look at it soon so i'll tell him what you have discovered thanks, I know it's an old thread but it might answer someone elses question so I thought i'd post.

no worries. at least it was a cheap fix. but i dread to think what would have happened if the wheel had come off ;-) because of this little gem i take the wheels off and take them to the tyre fitters myself. but its all about how much ££ you have and how much time youve got ;-)

It was indeed a loose wheel, got about an eighth of a turn on it.

Similar incendent at cadwell the other week, fortunatly an eagled eyed skidlids spotted the problem, not only were the sprocket carrier nuts within an MM of falling off but the wheel nut was not torqued up as it should have been

I seem to remember that you get a very similar clonk if the rear wheel locating pegs break too - dont ask me how I know, but I still have a spare one, 5 years after selling the 916
