999 very much the same bike for 4 years of racing and competing on an equal footing more so than all the ducati superbikes previously ever!!!!!!!!..........and THE most succesful ducati racing bike ever.........fact!!!!!!!!!!! the multistrada ............diffffferent, yes but unique ducati thinking for the good or bad!

848 a cheap alternative to compete with the japs............and totally against the ducati way!!!!!!!

You could always upgrade your 749R with a load of trick bits that SharpyG's got - most of the Factory/Corse/WSS bits he has have never got further than the garage door let alone on the road.

Keep the 749R....... not the prettiest thing on the planet but a bit more unique than a run of the mill 848.

Crikey, I didn’t expect such a response. Some interesting thoughts and some very valid views on the matter.

I had thought the results would be about 50:50, after all, the 1098/848 has moved things on considerably in terms of styling, ease-of-servicing and some technology; of course, if there was an R version it would be a no-brainer.

There’s absolutely no reason on this planet that I would move over to an 848 from my current machine, it was purely a conversation I had with a chap in a Ducati dealership that prompted me to raise the question. Everyone has their own opinion, he has his, I thought I’d raise the question here…

Jools, nice comment, I’ll swap you a ride on mine for a go on your 888???

Now I’ll concentrate on a proper, real-world conundrum, shall I go to bed or have another beer… Hmmmm, I feel another poll coming on….

Magpie.

The 848/1098 hasn't moved things on in terms of styling at all, if anything it's gone backwards to appeal to more buyers! Bland=Sales unfortunately I'll never buy a 1098 or 848 simply because the quality of engineering doesn't appear to be there and it's soooooooooo bland

Ride one and decide for yourself. I did....the 996S went straight up for sale and I bought the 848.

Same Ducati noise and feel as ever. Easy, flattering handling and more go than is decent Best buy I ever made.

I haven't ridden a 749 and certainly not an R to compare directly, so unless you want to take the opinions of, by and large, people that haven't ridden one or the other, you need to get out and try it, see if it flicks your switch like it did to all the others that bought them Don't listen to the bitter people that can't accept progress, they know nothing Ducati don't stop putting what they learn from racing bikes into their new models.

I'm a distinctly average rider and it makes me look good anyway...
