From memory you have to drop down the underseat/mudgaurd to get at the nuts. Once the two nuts are removed there is a plunger/type push in locator bar on the light that sits in a rubber locator on the frame/handle. You need to very carefully ease the whole unit out from this. It is very easy to break so take your time

thanks chaps although I didnt see your posts before I got home tonight it confirmed what I thought I could see in the workshop manual.

It certainly could have been designed considerably simpler and with the exception of the indicators the nastiest cheapest part of a great bike.

Having read johnny's last paragraph I got a 19mm podger from my work bag and prised the spigot from the rubber locator grommet and now it is unbroken and free. I may well modify it before it goes back on.

In the same light (sic), is there a viable LED tail light/indicator combo that can be used on the ST's. It would be nice to get rid of those stalks that are so prone to being tweaked when squeezing by the bike in the garage (things are really tight here in Japan).
Cheers
