Spot on. I used a lwb Sprinter but in reality a swb would do just fine, as the 3 bikes go in side-by-side. The spare room at the front just gave us loads of space for parts, wheels etc. I wouldn't want to do it with bikes with decent bodywork though. I put two bikes in front first and strapped them to the sides with the bars and cans tight against the sides. Then pushed the other in between backwards. We had to remove the seat unit from the bike in the middle, and just wedged it in with cushions. The advantage of a lwb is you could put one or two bikes up front and two behind without squashing anything in.
If you are hiring a van then consider a luton body with a tail lift. You shouldn't need ramps then and you may get one bike across the front sideways and two behind it lengthways.

Thanks for all the comments, I've had an idea. I own a few vans for work but can only get 1 bike, maybe 2 at a squeeze in as they're racked inside. So 1 bike in the van and 2 on a trailer.

Next question, anyone got a 2-bike trailer for sale?
