Sorry to be a doom monger, but have been there done that.........

It's not lead to lead. The terminal is made of brass or something similar (see pic: http://shop.wemoto.com/pictures/full...Y/10001745.jpg)

It's difficult to describe because I've reshaped the metal of the terminal, but I can get a good tight contact by wedging a flat bit of the terminal between the stub and the body of battery. I then just need to encase the join in something solid so it can't vibrate loose.
