On fire !!

Hi everyone. My new 1000ds SS is awaiting new lower fairing panels after the exhaust 'slipped' and rested against the plastic causing it to burn through on one side and melt the other. (After 200 miles!!) It looks to me like the jubilee clip securing the exhaust on the vertical drop directly behind the engine is too big to do the job. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Also, the fuel light keeps coming on at around 75 miles from a fill-up and staying on and the back brake doesn't work. Nice bike though.......

Tony.
Sorry to hear about your problems with such a new bike... But THANKS for posting this message.
I also have a 1000ds ss, and i have just checked my rear down pipe.
I can see where the pipe originally was, and it is now some 10mm lower.
IE slowly working its way towards the body work. I expect it would reach it just as it come out of warranty. (mine is just over 1 year old with 4k on the clock) Stating the obvious you should not have to pay to have your bike put bake to new condition.

It would appear that the clamp bottoms out before the outer pipe is squashed onto the inner pipe. I can see a visable gap between my pipe sleeves which shows that the clamp has bottomed out before the pipes have even started to be clampped together!

I will be contacting Ducati / local dealer to report this tomorrow as it could (as in your instance) be quite nasty.

as for the other stuff..

I have no problems with the fuel light, It usually comes on at around 150 miles. (very ecomonical at around 55 mpg. I need to ride faster.)

The rear brake is very weak, maybe Ducati consider this to be anti-lock braking?

Hope you get sorted soon.
Rich

Tony,
Further to my note above, and following discussions with Ducati and my Local dealer.... they know that this problem affects some Ducati's, and suggest that I should take the exhaust pipes off and hacksaw a chunk off the clamp bolt area to allow in to compress the down pipe.

Not what I would call a proper solution or helpfull response. I'll let you know what the final solution is.

I created a thread a while back concerning the exact same thing with a 900sport last year, I also have had the same problem with my current 800ss. Looks like its quite common with more recent bikes, I'm currently waiting for my replacement fairing and fron exhaust downpipe.

It's worth checking once the bike is up on a stand to see if the exhausts are parallel, I know mine aren't and it looks to be a problem with the front downpipe.

Hi Nat, which panels do you have?

left/right - uppers lowers? Front nose section?

Or are they of the half variety? < That I may be interested in.

Hi Stu

Ive got;

- left uppers in half fairing version
- left and right uppers in full fairing version
- Lower lefts
- right hand headlamp cowls

If you wanted the half version..it looks like theres only a little lug at the back that needs cutting off and it would do the job (although wouldnt be as rounded)..??

Let me know if thats of interest and ill price em up. At 45% off list your getting close to the cost of aftermarket glassfibre track panels !!

Cheers

Hi Rich (et al)
Sorry to hear you've had similar probs but glad you've spotted them before the meltdown!!

Mines back from the dealers with new panels and looking good. The helpful guys at Ducati Coventry have replaced the rubber bushes (designed to hold the panels off the exhaust) with larger ones which, should the exhaust move, will hopefully do the trick.

On a different note has anyone discovered the perfect luggage for the SS. The rear panels below the seat look quite heavily sculpted and I'm worried my soft luggage could do some damage - a tailpack could be the answer..?
