More than do-able by the home mechanic, no reason why you couldn't measure stuff either, assuming you have the correct tooling, or can get it.

Depends how good an average home mech you are, but by the end of it, I would say you'd be well above average!

Well I have had an offer for a pro to strip down the engine if I take it out.

He will charge me under £200 to strip & report what's needed.

Difficult to say what you can and can't do yourself without knowing how handy you are with the spanners etc.
A look at a workshop or Haynes manual might help you decide. Never seen the haynes manual for the 748/996 so don't know at what point they go for the "refer to dealer" advice

Not a cheap fix, maybe do some of the donkey work yourself and get someone who knows what they are doing to do the tricky stuff.

Most of the internet sites I have read about this say it did not affect the later 996 - well ******** cos it does.

Ducati Coventry service told me it needs checking regularly.
