You can also try the following.

As mentioned the span/free play adjustment in the lever.
Bleed the system.
Dismantle and clean the clutch plates.

This should cure your problem. However, if the seals in the master and or slave cylinder are failing then fluid will pass by them. This would create the problem you are having.
An outside possibility is that the new plates have warped.

Post how you get on.
