Thanks guys. Why do Haynes specify 10w40?
I am reluctant to throw the oil that I have away.

I assume it's because they allow for temperature variants, north pole to africa if you will. I used 10/40 for ages with no ill effects apart from I was forever topping the level up. It burnt oil like an old banger 15/50 cured it.

10W-40 FS was what ducati specified when the 996 was new, although just about everyone uses 15W oil in their desmoquattro engine nowadays
