Really stupid question but you are putting the oil into the round hole to the right of the clutch cover? If your pouring it in and the level isnt rising then its either leaking out as quickly as your pouring it in or your pouring it into the wrong place.
Bikes that are run in too gently can burn oil as well. The fully synth in my bike tends to stay fairly clean for 2000 miles or so.
