Anyone on here got one?

I've had my mini for about 2-3 weeks now, and just getting to get my head round the thing, not so much the ipod, but more iTunes, and such things like smart playlists etc

I've got a 3rd gen 20gig, had it for months now.

I love my ipod - it's not healthy! I actually bought it for work to allow me to use as portable storage, and transfer large files from one office to home. It does that too, and very well.

Get yourself an itrip and you can listen to it anywhere there is a radio.

Itunes is ok - you just need to get your head round it. I believe you can use musicmatch to transfer tracks, but I'm not sure if it's any easier.

I keep looking at the iTrip.... I'm still undecided most of the tracks on my mini are from my CD collection anyway, and only do two 45 minute trips in the car per day, so no real rush or benefit for me until I fancy a longer journey.

I've been reading a few forums and it does appear you can use musicmatch to sync etc with an ipod, although there is a rumour on one of the forums that claims itunes 4.7 will disable your musicmatch etc.

I went for the mini because I don't need all that storage for music, and I wanted the smallest and largest/lightest there was for when I go snowboarding. I have a solid state 1/2Gb MP3 player which works great, but you soon get through the tracks over a 2 week snowboarding jaunt.

I must admit though that the amount of customisation you can do through iTunes is impressive, and the amount of additional hardware from Apple and other companies is great also, and the mini products are coming along, playing a bit of a catch up at the mo with the other ipods in the range.

I've had a 30gig 3G one for a while now. I love certain aspects of it but it's not perfect. Being a UK one it has a volume limit on it (unlike non EU ones) which simply isn't loud enough. Battery life leaves a lot to be desired too.

iTunes is infinitely better than MusicMatch or any other software for using with your player. I've used most of them now for greater or lesser periods of time and none compare for simplicity or features. It'll take a little while to get used to and it helps if you're prepared to sit down and rate as many of your songs as possible but eventually you get there.

Had an iTrip too for about a week. It may work well in the back end of nowhere but once you get near any major city the radio waves tend to be completely clogged meaning you get blown away by commercial and pirate stations all the time. On the bright side I managed to flog it on eBay for roughly what I paid for it.

Most people go off the specs when buying a jukebox (biggest hard drive, longest battery life, etc) but having had a few of these, I found the biggest differentiating factor to be the user-interface.

I am currently using an iriver ihp120 which is the sexiest non-ipod out there.

The plus points are that it's small (but houses a large drive), plug&play for transferring your other files, 18 hour battery life and plays pretty much any format you have out there.

Unfortunately, it also takes 1 minute to boot up and is really awkward to organise playlists. If you want ease of use, go for one of the Creative jukebox zen series - great interface and can create playlists on the go. My one was stolen and I stupidly replaced it with the iriver.

I'll probably be getting the Sony NWHD1 (catchy!), but not before I've had a chance to play with one first.

Hrmmm ... at least you get to hear a bit of NWA (brings back memories) .. I warmed up to this song at the state championships one year!!!

Tony,

The ipod battery issue has been resolved since the introduction of the 3rd gen machines.

Also, Ipod batteries are now available for £40 if they do go belly up out of warranty.
