Chances are if they're 3 for a tenner then they're probably very old and not likely to be XP compatible at all.

There should be no difference between Home and Pro, certainly none that would stop it running games.

Might be worth Googling for the game names and XP as this might yield some results on getting them working.

There are ways in XP to run a program as if it was 98 -

Interestingly, this article says that XP is compatible with both 2000 and ME - ME is no more than 98 with a load of patches!

You could try running the games using the Win98 compatability mode (right click the relevant installed EXE file then select the compatability tab). I had the same problem myself with some of the cheap kids games and this allowed most of them to run. I too do not think there will be any difference between XP home and Prof.

I agree with Ant, this has f**k all to do with XP pro v home, but is more to do with ancient games that will probably only run under Dos 5 or similar ancient OS!

Tell the skinflint to but his son a cheap s/h 'puter and run 98, should work.

Nah, Keith888 has the answer. XP (home and pro) has a compatibility mode that allows programs to run in a shell with a command set representing the OS it was designed to run in originally.

Off the top of my head ... After installing the game right clink on the icon it places on the desktop and choose properties. There is a Compatibility tab, click on it and you can choose to run the program in compatibility mode and choose which OS to emulate. I've attached a picture showing the drop-down box with the options.

This should do the trick.

I did find that on one particular game it was the installer on the CD that was crashing ie I couldn't even get the game installed in the first place. Got it eventually to work by 'exploring' the files on the CD then finding the relevant EXE files (as well as the autostart) then set each one to WIN98 compatible. I think on one I had to bypass the autoinstaller and run the install.exe manually. Bit of a faff but worth it for the look on the childs face!
