The 600SS uses a wheel with a 20mm front spindle, but its bearings and spacer can be fitted in the later wheels in place of their bearings and spacers that suit the 25mm spindle.

I am fairly certain my 750SS uses the same 4.5" rear wheel, I will check.

And yes the wheels are prone to damage I have a rear with a nice bit of distortion in it.

That's useful to know. I wonder if 5 spoke Marchesinis would fit in? I have 3 sets available as well. ...albeit with 5.5" rear rims.... and one brand new 3 spoke front in black altho' getting my hands on it might take some effort.

And the early front ones which are common to the 851 & 888 use 17mm spindles......

dinged rims can also be due to tire profile.

on the 900SS bikes the front was usually a 120/70. Some 900SS/CR's came with 120/60's and this frequently caused bent front rims. Switching to a 120/70 minimized this problem on the SS/CR's.

FWIW.
