virus advice

my brothers machine has got one of those viruses that give you so many seconds then shuts down the system
his a.v prog is so out of date it wont even find the virus let alone identify it
ive tried the removel tools from symantic for blast and welch(summit like that) but it's still shutting down just before i can finish downloading the a.v updates.
so how do i identfy this virus in order to get rid of it.
any one hazzerd a guss to which one it is.
also i heard tell of a dos command that would prevent the sys from shutting down?

Hi Glyn, I'm a bit out of touch with this thing but you used to be able to get your hands on a bootable floppy with a dos scanner on it. This will help you get around the virus kicking in.

I'd have a quick search on the Symantec or McAfee site's for such an animal.

Another thing you could do is put another disk in the PC (I know I'm getting a bit more far fetched here but a lot of people have extra bits lying around ...) and boot from that and then scan the other disk. Once you've got your IDE settings and an OS installed on the second disk ... of course.

Temp fix

Hi as a temporary fix only when the shutdown pops up , Click start at bottom left , Click run, the type cmd and ok. When dos screen appears type after the c:/ documents and settings type shutdown.exe -a make sure there is a space between exe and -a and then press enter. This will abort shutdown then you can minimize it. Hope this helps then you can get on internet.

Andy

Advice

This type of virus sometimes hides in the system restore file. You may want to try going into control panel, system, performance, system properties, file system and then check the disable restore box. Try rebooting your pc then.

If you have access to Norton Anti Virus 2004 or later try changing your bios settings so that your CD is shown as the first boot device. Put the NAV disc in the drive and reboot the pc. This should then load the NAV software in DOS mode. If you are lucky the virus may be known to NAV.

Hope this helps
