I'm off to the US next week and there's a couple of cheap 996 carbon airboxes for sale out there (which they'll courier to my hotel ) so I can bring it back and protect it from the postal service.

So, big question is, will it fit onto a '97 748

YES!

748/916/996 airboxes all the same. 748R and 998 are different though.
