because from the price they have quoted I don't think its the bog standard model that I am looking for... either that or their hourly rate for engineers is in the region of £300!!
Lily, You dont say whether you are replacing a Combi boiler or replacing an existing conventional one. The Gas Board are in my opinion very expensive. What I suggest is you optain a quote from a CORGI registered plumber,to give you some idea I charge for a 28CDi Worcester Bosch Combi (Best on Market) around £2000 to instal and fit to an existing system. There are a few But's to that . A 22mm Gas service pipe must feed the new boiler thats normally a single pipe from the meter with nothing else on that line. Cold mains supply has adiquate pressure. A scale inhibitor fitted to protect the combi heat exchanger. Regulations require the heating system be brought up to a specific standard i.e. Thermostatic rad valves fitted to all but one rad and a Room thermostate fitted. This is not the plumber trying to boost up the work and price but Goverment Legislation involving Building Regs and Planning. Its getting serious this Plumbing game and at last seeing the demise of the "Cowboy" You would be far better to get a guy in and quote for the work than trying to pick up a Boiler your self then go looking for some one after. Personally Im not keen on "Fitting only" I dont no if the "new" boiler is one year old or been sitting on a shelf for 6 years. Im sure there are some good guys in your area, look under CORGI in the Yellow Pages. In April 2005 when all new and replacement boiler must be Condensing Boilers this will be even more expensive. Having said that I would think thats what the Gas Board have quoted you . Worcester Bosch do do a HE Condensing Boiler . As for what you need in terms of output most Combi's are made to produce more than enough heat output for all but the biggest homes Four Beds 10 Rads etc,the one thing is how much hot water do you need, The bigger the boiler the bigger the output i.e. 24CDi 28CDi 35CDi . 24 might give you 8 litres a minute of hot water at the tap ,where as the 28 gives 9.2 litres and the 35 11 litres . I've found the 28 CDi ideal for most peoples needs. Hope this give you some idea, may be some of the other lads might be able to come up with some thing to . Regards 4D
lily, i'd agree with everthing 4d says. Worcesters are a v. good combi manufacturer as are vaillant (whch i fit on a daily baisis). the quotes the gas board give are on average a f. massive p. take.
what area do you live in?
one last thing, when you get somone round, ask to see their corgi card. if they're registerd they wont mind showing you. if they start making excuses and look shifty, show them the door. theyre probably unregistered and should not touch gas.
