I keep reading that people say the new Dukes sound crap without Termi exhausts. I think my duke sounds fine, but would it make that much of a difference if I put new exhausts on it. Also how much are they for a 749s and will the police be pulling me over every 5 mins?
I also hankered after the sound that my mate's 916 makes ... lovely! The stock 749 is pretty quiet as Ducati's go, and after a very short time the rattle from the clutch will drown out the exhaust note (like by the time it is run in!). I beleive they have had to forget the dry clutch on the 05 bikes because of tighter noise regs. Stupid really.
Anyway, Termis. I had a Termi system put on my 03 749s and it does sound great. Better than that, it goes a lot better too ... more low/midrange grunt. I've not been tugged yet, but if they did check it would be a £30 fine (?), no points. I've ridden up alongside a police car at light in town and just had the bike ticking over and they ignored me. I pulled away very carefully and they ignored me. The biggest problem around our way is frightening horses. I have to shut the throttle and coast past them or I will have my neighbours ganging up on me! So far they have not complained though.
The cost a bomb though .... £1150 fitted with the replacement ECU (not just a chip change). There are cheaper systems out there mind you that will probalby be just as good.
There was a thread going on here only yesterday about db killers ... some found in Germnay for about 120 Euros for 999 Termis. Might be worth looking that one up, especially for when it gets around to MOT time.
Cheers mate. Thats quite a price tag eh? But if it doesn't affect my warrenty I may give them a go when the bike is run in properly. Funny really, the Harley I had before this was louder than any race can I have ever heard and the police never batted an eye lid at me!
Thing is, they are not THAT loud when just low revving. Spank it though and you'll wake the dead! Just don't do that where you are going to draw unwanted attention.
My wife has carbon Termis on her MOnster 620. They were a lot cheaper at £400 (Ducati Performance cans, but were actually Termis), and possibly because it is a 2 valver it is a lot more mellow. The 4 valve motors do tend to have more of a raw mettalic quality to them. I just did a track day at Cadwell and my wife was taking pictures and a bit of video. You can clearly pick the one exhaust note out of all the UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycles) that I am riding past with.
Had mine fitted to my 749S this week, the difference in sound is chalk and cheese. Luckily I didn't pay as much as HW and got them fitted free by the dealer.
