Why? DOT 5 is the silicone based fluid that should not be used.

DOT 5.1 has twice the boiling point properties of DOT 4 and is fully compatible.
I've been using it on my bike since I started in DD...

I don't count the links I just have my largest sprocket with the wheel fully forward. That way I can higher the gearing in the knowledge that the wheel can go back and the chain is catered for. :)
