You don't get anything for free, and people have to pay for web hosting and domain names (the www.etc bit) and so if you know how to look these things up, then you can trace it back to the owner, or at least the person that paid the bills. Using tools like Netcraft and SamSpade you can dig a load of information about websites and their hosts.
