The problem with allowing the dealer to set any mileage would be that they could (possibly) set it up or down on the previous figure - so that doesn't really fix the problem.
Don't know about the MS, but on my BMW if you press the trip-counter button while there is no key in, the mileage comes up. Maybe the bikes work the same?
