If the original number is still on the headstock, adding the same number alongside it for all to see should not be a problem.

I accept that the integrity of the original number has been lessoned slightly by the sandblast but you would hardly be trying to cover up the fact. Or tampering with whats left of the original number.

Open and honest. Perhaps get a dealer to re stamp and keep the paperwork??
