Spookily, I found that after I'd fitted an oil cooler to my 748BP, the water temp gauge read a few degrees higher than it had done prior to the cooler!

I rekon that this was probably due to the oil cooler "blocking" the v-piece vent that had previously allowed cooling air to cool the engine. In addition to blocking the vent, the oil cooler would actually heat up the air in the fairing as the air exiting it would have been heated by the oil it was cooling.

Dunno what it does to the actual oil temperature...hopefully it was cooling it.

It's a question of thermal heat transfer and fluid dynamics...help.
