Yes, interesting handling with 30+ stone aboard but it maintained a respectable pace despite the excess baggage!

Cheers Rushjob, thats a great help. I will be starting the stripdown later and will be fitting

1. Alloy Swinging Arm from ST4S
2. Carbon fibre number plate holder
3. New Ohlins suspension.

Guess it should take an evening but will proabably take best part of a week, hopefully back on the road by next Saturday.

You shouldn't need to alter the preload setting-I often have Jo on the back(granted she only weighs 8stone) and a couple of turns on the adjuster does it perfectly. Even fully loaded 2 up with luggage it never needs full adjustment. The hydraulic adjuster gives a lot of movement.

My 4s came with a C-spanner in the tool kit but you don't need it for the rear preload. The adjustment is all done with the hydraulics what's more the lockrings have a pin fitted to lock their postion. You would need to remove that first to adjust them. It's my reckoning that the lockrings are not intended to be adjusted by the user.

Same here,
our 4s gets used pretty much exclusively for touring two up with luggage, and I've never moved the lock rings.
I wound up the preload to stop grounding out on fast sweepy bumpy bends, and left it at that.
I did however adjust the ride height adjuster link to get sufficent ground clearance (my bike seemed to have a very low ride height when delivered from new).
Its been fine for the last three years (if you ignore the bent ride height adjuster, but that's another story )

ST4S's were all delivered with their arse's dragging like a dog with worms-supposedly to make the bike stable with 2 fat germans and a load of luggage if they hit a big bump halfway round a corner. Rear ride height needs raising-lots. I set mine so the rear tyre is just touching the ground when on the centerstand-been like that for 5 years now.

Been out for a long ride today with the wife on the back and had to reduce the suspension a lot as it was too hard. But it didnt bottom out and thats exactlty what we wanted.
