Same here, 
 our 4s gets used pretty much exclusively for touring two up with luggage, and I've never moved the lock rings. 
 I wound up the preload to stop grounding out on fast sweepy bumpy bends, and left it at that. 
 I did however adjust the ride height adjuster link to get sufficent ground clearance (my bike seemed to have a very low ride height when delivered from new).
 Its been fine for the last three years (if you ignore the bent ride height adjuster, but that's another story
